The kind folks at Plaid Crafts recently sent me several of their new products to craft with. I’ve enjoyed all of it, but my favorite product so far has been the faux finishes. You know how I love to create faux finishes!!

At first I thought the faux rust finish was just paint. I was surprised to open it up and see the texture! Check out the grainy texture of the product. This was really going to help create a faux rust finish. Yay!!

I started small with this first project. Since I was distressing the appearance of the wood, I wanted the chicken wire to look similarly aged. I started by brushing the dark rust texture over all the wire. This immediately gave the shiny metal an aged appearance. The clumpy texture of the product helped create the appearance of corrosion and aging, too.

After that had dried, I brushed the light rust product (a reddish color) randomly on the chicken wire. This helped further “age” the appearance of the wire and gave the finish some contrast and interest.

I’m really excited about my completed rustic shelf. It looks so good in my craft room! Ready to see the rest of the project? You can get my complete tutorial on the Darice blog by clicking here.
