Transform beautiful old doilies into brightly colored, multi functional doily bowls! A great way to organize small items easily.
I’ve joked that I call my style “retro bold” because I love to combine old, thrifted items with bright colors to create something new with. To help get my craft room organized next year, I broke into my stash of doilies. Why, yes, I do have a doily stash…doesn’t everyone?
I gave those old doilies a face lift with bright color and then shaped them into fun, funky bowls. Retro bold organization!
Supplies:
- Doilies
- Tulip One Step Tie Dye
- Aleene’s Fabric Stiffener
- Bowl
- Plastic wrap or foil
Step one: Place the doily in a shallow bowl or pan. Add water to the dye bottle, close the top, and shake until the powder has dissolved in the bottle. Spray the liquid onto the doily to soak it completely. Wring the excess dye out and place the doily in a plastic bag for several hours. Repeat with the other doilies.
Step two: Rinse the doilies thoroughly until the water runs clear. Hand wash them or wash them on the gentle cycle and lay flat to dry.
Step three: Cover a bowl with plastic wrap or foil. This will make it easier to remove the doily from the bowl once it is dry!
Step four: Place the doily in a shallow bowl and cover it with Aleene’s fabric stiffener. Squeeze the doily to get the fabric stiffener into all the nooks and crannies and to remove the excess.
Step five: Drape the doily over the bowl and let it dry overnight.
Once the doily is dry it will be extremely stiff! Simply peel the foil or plastic wrap off the bowl to remove the doily, then carefully remove the foil from the doily. I’ve got lots of fun items in my new craft room storage bowls…my baker’s twine on DIY holders, my linen stars, and lots of ribbon. What will you store in your DIY dyed doily bowls?
