While I love modern technology, I miss the hands on aspect of old school media. The feel of a vinyl album, the smell of 35 mm film, and the sight of movie reels all bring back memories. I remember how proud I was of earning an A/V "license" in elementary school, so I could help the teacher load the movie projector. While photo slides were a little before my time, I do have fond memories of going through my parent's boxes of slides and holding them up to the light to squint at the tiny … [Read more...]

DIY Anthropologie Inspired Coral Flower Necklace
Spring is finally here (in Texas, at least...I know lots of you are still waiting), and I'm ready to wear accessories in fresh, bright colors. I was drawn to the "Glam" line of Styled by Tori Spelling jewelry products, and knew I wanted to make something special with the beautiful coral flower pendant. (This post first appeared at Crafts Unleashed, where I am thrilled to be part of the design team.) The flower reminded me of this gorgeous piece at Anthropologie, so I made my own knock off … [Read more...]
DIY “Alien Head in a Jar” Prank
As I mentioned in this round up post, I love practical jokes and gags. I saw this idea for a head in a jar, and thought that was a bit too macabre for my family, so I made me own version with an alien head instead. This is a quick project to make! Supplies used: InkJet Transparency Paper Spray on Waterproof Sealant Glass Jar Alcohol Ink Step one: Print this alien head on transparency paper. You will need to resize it as needed to fit your jar. Trim off excess. Step … [Read more...]

DIY “Time in a Bottle” Steampunk Style Earrings
I have a collection of old, inexpensive watches that never get used. Some were my dad's, but most are relics of my days before cell phones and iPads. Rather than toss these watches, I decided to take some of them apart to create something new. I used empty vial charms to create steampunk-inspired "time in a bottle" earrings. (This post first appeared at Dollar Store Crafts, where you can find my new tutorial every Tuesday!) Supplies used: Vial Charms (from Consumer Crafts) … [Read more...]
Make Retro Inspired Viewfinder Pillows (with your own pictures!)
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have a weakness for all things vintage and retro! I love bright colors, too, so I combined my two crushes into this fun, bright project: viewfinder pillows! I have very fond memories of squinting into a View Master and seeing images of my favorite cartoon characters and shows. As an homage to this retro "icon", I made my own fabric viewfinder with images of my favorite people, my four kids. (This post first appeared at Crafts Unleashed, where … [Read more...]
How to Upcycle Goodwill Finds with Chalk Paint
A lot of crafters head to big box stores to find items to create with. I like to head to Goodwill to find what I need. Instead of flimsy wood and paper items, I can usually find solid wood, well made products that I can repurpose with just a little paint. It keeps these things from going to a landfill, and it helps the community!I do a lot of crafting with repurposed items, and I've written several posts, like this one, where I show you how to use glue and spray paint to craft … [Read more...]
Make a Bird Feeder with Cups and Saucers from Goodwill
As a child, I loved Disney's movie "Alice in Wonderland." I was enchanted by the wild antics that ensued at the Mad Hatter's tea party, and always dreamed of how fun it would be to happen upon an "un-birthday party" in the woods. Now that I have kids, I've decided to create a Mad Hatter inspired garden area (see my teapot bird bath!), where we can picnic and celebrate un-birthdays. Best of all, I get to recycle items purchased at Goodwill San Antonio. (This post first appeared at Dollar … [Read more...]
