Sew your own cornhole bags

These DIY cornhole bags are a sensory sewing project for kids that doubles as the softest, most satisfying backyard game you’ll ever play! These bags are like a weighted stuffie: super soft, satisfying to hold, and genuinely fun to toss. I started out wanting to make a fun summer game that was sensory friendly, and then I realized this project would also be perfect for teaching kids how to sew! Whether you’re looking for a summer project or a fun activity to enjoy, this is the project for you!

Supplies for Making DIY Cornhole Bags:

  • Super soft fabric in corn kernel texture vibes. For the corn-inspired look, use golden yellow fabric for most of your bags with a deep green accent bag per set. The contrast is beautiful and makes it easy to tell the two teams apart during the game — just like green husks on a corn cob!
  • Fairfield World Low Loft Batting to give that puffy, cushioned feel.
  • Stick Fusible Interfacing to keeps everything structured while you sew.
  • Poly-Pellets to add that satisfying weighted feel kids love.

How to Make Cornhole Bags

  1. Cut the fabric, batting, and interfacing into 7 inch squares.
  2. Fuse the batting to the fabric with Stick Fusible Interfacing. This stabilizes the soft fabric and makes it much easier for beginners (and kids!) to handle while sewing.
  3. Free sew corn kernel lines on the yellow fabric and husk lines on the green fabric.
  4. Pin the layers together, then sew around the perimeter leaving a two inch opening to turn. This is a perfect straight-line sewing practice for beginners.
  5. Turn & fill with 2 cups of Poly-Pellets. Turn the bag right-side out through the opening, then use a funnel to pour in your Poly-Pellets. These give the bags that wonderful weighted, beanbag feel, like a soft stress ball.
  6. Slip stitch or top-stitch the opening closed. Now you have a corn-on-the-cob cornhole bag ready for backyard action!
