This ottoman slipcover DIY is a sponsored post. Transform an outdated ottoman from Goodwill San Antonio into a fun piece of dorm decor in under one hour!
I found this old ottoman at my local Goodwill San Antonio store, and it was solid and clean with no stains. It just looked so dated! Since the piece was still in good shape, I gave it a quick makeover with a furry slip cover. This quick project gave this old ottoman new life, and it adds a fun punch of color to any room.
I had hoped to use this in my walk in closet, because it is so cute and also comfy to sit on. My daughter fell in love with it, however, and insisted that it be part of her room makeover. This ottoman slipcover DIY is perfect for decorating a dorm on a budget, and it coordinates with my other teen/dorm decor DIYs. Supplies Used to Make the Ottoman Slipcover DIY:
- Thrifted Ottoman from Goodwill
- Faux Fur Fabric in Aruba by Shannon Fabric
- Craft Knife
- Cutting Mat
- Needle
- Thread
- Pins
- Ruler
Measure the ottoman from the ground over to the other side. Do this from front to back and side to side. These will be the measurements for your slip cover.
For example, if you measure 48″ from the front to the back of the ottoman and 36″ from one side to the other side, then you will cut a rectangle of fur fabric that is 48×36 inches. I used approximately 2 yards of fabric for my ottoman makeover.
My secret for cutting fur fabric with no mess is to use a craft knife on the back of the fabric! When you cut the fur with scissors you wind up with cut fur pieces flying everywhere. Instead, use a ruler to mark the cutting line, place a mat under the fabric, and cut with a sharp craft knife. This will just cut the back of the fabric and leave the fur intact.
Place the fabric over the ottoman with the fur side down and the back facing up. Arrange the fabric so the ends are all even with the ground.
Pin the edges of the fabric. You will press the fabric together firmly on the edge of the ottoman and use large pins to keep the fabric together. Repeat this with all four sides.
Keep the fabric on the ottoman and sew along the pinned edges, removing pins as you go. Repeat for all sides.
Remove the fabric from the ottoman and cut off the excess fabric. It will be a triangle scrap of fabric on each edge.
Flip the fabric so that the fur is on the outside, and slide the furry slip cover over the ottoman.
This quick makeover makes SUCH a huge difference. That out of date ottoman now has a funky, fresh, new look in no time at all. Have fun making over your Goodwill San Antonio furniture accents by making your own slip covers!
