DIY Bowl Cozy: Instant Craftification

Hey friends! I’ve got a project for you today that I am obsessed with, and I promise you have time for it — like, actual “I have an hour before dinner” time. I’m calling this one an instant craftification project, because that’s exactly what it is: quick, fun, and instantly gratifying. We’re making a DIY bowl cozy!

If you’ve never made one, a bowl cozy is basically a padded fabric hug for your bowl — it lets you pull something piping hot straight out of the microwave without doing the classic hot-bowl juggle across the kitchen. We’ve all been there.

Why You Need One (Or Five)

I could go on forever about how much I love these, but here’s the short version:

  • It’s soup season, and that alone is reason enough.
  • If you’ve got a high schooler or college kid living on instant ramen, this is basically a survival tool disguised as a cute craft.
  • Got little ones at home? These are great for containing cereal or ice cream messes too — win-win.
  • They’re washable and reversible, so pick two fabrics you love and get two looks out of one project.
  • They make the sweetest little handmade gifts. Fun fabric + an hour of sewing = a gift that actually gets used.

Beginner-Friendly, Pinky Promise

Here’s my favorite part: you only need to know how to sew a straight line for this one. That’s it. That’s the whole skill requirement. So if you’ve been wanting an excuse to sit down at your machine, or you’re teaching a beginner how to sew, this is the project. Grab your most fun, most “you” fabric and let’s go.

A Quick but Important Note

Because this cozy is going in the microwave, this is one of those projects where you really can’t substitute materials. Your fabric, batting, and thread all need to be 100% cotton — no polyester, no blends. That’s exactly why I reach for Fairfield World’s Toasty Cotton batting for this one. It’s 100% cotton batting made specifically with microwave projects like this in mind, so you can feel good using it.
