I love to knock off high end items, and if I can do it with items I have on hand it’s even better!

When I saw the World Traveller collection at Kirkland’s, I pinned most of it. I loved the fusion of metallics and animal prints.  The decorative finials reminded me of glass Christmas ornaments, and that’s how this idea was born.

I was able to make my knock off using three items I already had:
a glass candle holder (wedding present, but you can get one at the dollar store)
curtain finial (old Goodwill purchase)
ornament (buy one or paint one like I did here)

To make your own decorative finial:

Step one:  Paint your glass candle holder with Americana Gloss Enamels.

Step two:  Remove the hook from the glass ornament and glue the tip of the ornament into the candle holder.
(Painted ornament tutorials are here and here.)

Step three:  Remove the screw from the finial.  I was able to just unscrew it.  Glue the finial to the top of the ornament.

I think it’s pretty darn close to the original idea.  Next, I need to finish my zebra and giraffe finials to have the complete set.  The beauty of DIY is that if you don’t like animal print, you can just go with a different design and make something you’ll love!

  1. I love the idea of using ornaments – they come in so many colors and how perfect for Christmas time, you can add finials to your mantel that match your tree exactly! Thanks for sharing!!
