I saw some amazing cake toppers on Etsy recently and decided to try to make my own! My youngest son turned 12, and he is a huge SSC Napoli fan (chip off the old block!) We spent our summer in Napoli and Italy, where we got to visit relatives and stock up on lots of Napoli soccer team goodies. Our team is the reigning Serie A champions, so I used their Scudetto win as inspiration for this DIY soccer cake topper.
DIY Soccer Cake Topper Supplies
- Ultra Metallics Vinyl Sheets in various colors
- Silhouette Chipboard
- Bamboo Skewers
- Silhoette Cameo and Design Studio
First I needed to create my design. I started with a large object as the background, and then I added details on top of it. Since my son is turning 12 I added that number to the scudetto (shield). Instead of an “N” in the blue Napoli logo I made it an “M” for my son’s name. This is what I love about making my own designs…I can customize it to match the birthday kiddo’s interests and personality!
I cut the background and the smaller elements out of chipboard first. Then I cut them out using a variety of vinyl products from StyleTech Craft. I LOVE their metallics and ultra glitters, so I used several of those to make this DIY soccer cake topper really pop.
Weed and transfer all the vinyl to the chipboard backings.
I had meant to assemble the elements using foam tape, so the different pieces would literally pop off the backdrop. Unfortunately I got so excited about this project that I grabbed my glue and forget my original plan. Oops! It still turned out cute but next time I will remember the foam dots!
Once the topper is assembled, tape wood skewers to the back so you can place it on the cake.
The best part of it was that the birthday boy LOVED his cake and the topper! Have fun crafting and creating for the people you love!
