This DIY galaxy cake stand is a fun party project I created for the DecoArt website several years ago. Galaxy themed items never go out of style, as we’re always looking to the stars, aren’t we? Since the glitter paint is not food safe, you’ll need to put a plastic plate or plastic wrap under the cake when you use this DIY cake stand. This would also be perfect for cupcakes or other small snacks, too!
Galaxy Cake Stand DIY Supplies
- Galaxy Glitter — Pink Cosmos
- Galaxy Glitter — Deep Space Blue
- Galaxy Glitter — Milky Way Blue
- Galaxy Glitter — Silver Moon
- Americana Acrylics — Lavender
- DecoArt Extreme Sheen — Pink Tourmaline
- DecoArt Extreme Sheen — Aquamarine
- Round wooden charger
- Wooden candle holder
- Laser cut word of choice
- Cake Stick
- Wood glue
- Assorted brushes
Basecoat the wood plate, the candleholder, and the wood word with alternating colors. I used Aquamarine, Lavender, and Aquamarine to create a vibrant galaxy inspired palette. One application of each color is enough to provide a good basecoat for the Galaxy Glitter.
Use a wide brush to apply the first layer of the Galaxy Glitter over the corresponding color paint.
After applying each shade of Galaxy Glitter, repeat the process. By the third application of glitter, you will have a nice glittery finish. You can add more applications of Galaxy Glitter as needed to achieve the desired finish. I applied 4 layers of glitter to this project.
When the glitter is completely dry, randomly brush on Silver Moon Galaxy Glitter to create the effect of patches of stars in the galaxy.
Use wood glue to glue the painted wood plate to the cake stand. When you are ready to serve cake, place a clear plastic charger over the painted surface before adding the cake.
Glue the glitter word phrase to a food safe cake stick.
Have fun crafting and creating your own DIY party decor!
