Crafting with Kids: How to Make Shrinky Dink Pendants

I got to enjoy some bonus craft time with my children over the holiday break.  Using Shrinky Dink made me feel like a kid again!

I was so excited to find plastic shrink film at Consumer Crafts.   I loved to use this stuff as a kid, and I have a few ideas for things *I* want to make.  But I also wanted my kids to have fun crafting with it, so we made pendants.

My 8 year old son loves to draw, and he was excited about the possibility of designing his own jewelry. First, I had him draw his design.  Then we placed the shrink film over the image so he could trace it and color it with permanent markers.  When that was done, he fussy cut the image and I punched a hole at one end.

It took just 3 minutes in a 250 degree even to complete our pendants.  We all stood at the oven for the full three minutes, watching the plastic curl and then go flat again.  It was so much fun!

All it took was a jump ring to attach the pendants to the chain, and the necklace (which my son proudly models below) is done.

My 3 year old had fun with this shrink dink pendants project, too!IMG_9906

She used markers to color the plastic, which I then punched into 1 inch circles.  I made holes on either side so they will be beads on a bracelet or necklace, whichever she chooses.

It’s still a work in progress, so these are the “before” pictures.  Finished project coming soon!
