I’ll be honest: I love the look of glitter, but I HATE the mess. Detest it! I had quit crafting with glitter for a long, long time, until I discovered DecoArt’s line of glitter paints. Finally, I could craft with glitter again without finding the sparkly stuff everywhere! Now I glitter most of my projects, and I get to enjoy the process without dealing with all the clean up.
To make these patriotic pots and badges, I used DecoArt’s Glamour Dust Glitter Paints and Craft Twinkles. Glamour Dust Glitter Paints have very fine glitter with a pretty hint of color, whereas Craft Twinkles have coarser glitter (more like the traditional glitter you might be used to). These are my kids’ absolute favorite paints. When they ask me to paint with them, they always run to grab my glitter paints. I can’t blame them. This stuff is great! I like the Twinkles for a thicker glitter application, and the Glamour Dust is perfect for paper embellishments and for giving larger projects just a hint of shimmer.
Materials Used:
- Pulp Pots (found in the dollar section at Target)
- Craft Twinkles Paint: Christmas Red, Silver
- Glamour Dust Paint: Ice Crystal, Sapphire Blue, Sizzling Red
- Americana Multi-Surface Paint: Blue Bird, Cotton Ball
- Patriotic Images from the Graphics Fairy
- Grungeboard
- DecouPage
- Ribbon
- Hot Glue Gun
Step one: Paint one pot white and the other blue. Once they have dried, paint over the color with the Glamour Dust paints.
Step two: I used the Craft Twinkles for the red pot. Just two heavy applications of the paint covered the pot….no craft paint needed, just pure glittery shimmer.
Step three: Print out patriotic images from the Graphics Fairy. Decoupage the images onto the grungeboard.
Step four: Apply Craft Twinkles paint to the edges of the grungeboard. Use the Glamour Dust paints to add shimmer to details of the graphics.
Step five: Embellish the pots with ribbon, glittered 3-D stars (tutorial here), and the patriotic images.
I filled my pots with paper shred and placed a battery operated tea light in them. These look really sweet on my patio table! They’d make great containers for party favors, or fill them with paper sparklers and use them as centerpieces. For another way to use the glittery patriotic images, check out my tutorial for the ribbon badges.
