This fabric accent rug is a great project for customizing your home decor on a budget.
I made this project for the Fairfield World site years ago, and I STILL use this fabric accent rug DIY everyday! It has held up for years. I love that it’s something I can just wipe clean. I used to have it in my coffee nook area, and now it’s in the laundry room in front of the machines. It catches detergent drips and drops along with other spills nicely, and all I have to do is wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
The foam roll I used is no longer manufactured, but you can find similar products. I found a large utility foam roll at Goodwill not too long ago, and I always see yoga mats at thrift stores…they would be perfect for this project!
Fabric Accent Rug DIY Supplies
- Thin Foam Roll
- Light cotton print fabric
- Mod Podge – Dishwasher Safe Version
- Americana Varnish (polyurethane finish)
- Large Brush
Step one: Unroll the mat several days before the project so it can lay flat.
Step two: Paint a light, even application of Mod Podge on the foam mat. Work quickly so it doesn’t dry! A wide brush speeds the process.
Step three: Place the fabric on the Mod Podged mat. Smooth out the bubbles and press the fabric firmly onto the mat.
Step four: Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the fabric. Let it dry 15-20 minutes before adding a second application. Let it dry completely.
Step five: Flip the mat over and fold the excess fabric onto the back of the mat. Use Mod Podge to adhere the fabric to the back of the mat. Let it dry completely.
Step six: Apply the varnish to the front of the mat. This will help seal and soften the finish.
