How to Make Faux Blue Mercury Glass

IMG_2856
When I saw a challenge at The CSI Project to create something with items from the dollar store, I knew exactly what I wanted to try:  painting glass!  This tutorial will show you how incredibly easy it is to paint a dollar store glass candle holder to match your home decor or party theme.

Heidi over at Mom’s Crafty Space  did a tutorial on how to DIY mercury glass, and I was itching to see how it would look with other colors.

I started with a very nice block candle holder from Dollar Tree.

I sprayed the inside with water.

Then I sprayed the wet glass with Krylon Ocean Breeze spray paint.  The blue wasn’t dark enough for me, so I spritzed again with water and added a second spray of paint.

Next time I will cover the exterior of the glass with tape.  It was easy to scrape the overspray off, but still annoying.

Finally,  I diluted some Deco Art white acrylic paint with a clear Americana gloss varnish and painted the inside, to help highlight the contrasts and seal the finish.

I filled my pretty new decorative glass with colored glass stones, also from the Dollar Tree.
